Warning: Pay very close attention to the company's return policy on their website. This product was too flimsy to use. I ordered a hard car top carrier (Yakima)instead and of course paid a pretty penny for it. The return policy of unused merchandise back to the company (RoofBag) is very unfair. They charged me a restocking fee of 20% for this unused item. I would not buy another thing from this company. The item that I returned to them was unused and in the original packaging that I received it in. What gives? They sure don't. I returned it within 10 days of receiving it. There should be a law against this. They will just resell the same product again. This is just morally wrong. I would understand if I actually took it outside and put it on my car but, I didn't. It never left this inside of my house until I packaged it up and shipped it back.

I recently bought this bag to use on a trip from Brooklyn, NY to Miami FL. I was moving and needed more space than I had in my car but I don't have enough things to warrant renting a truck or van even, plus I needed to get my car there. After researching all of my options and reading reviews I decided to take a risk and but this carrier.
Some information on my car - I drive an 09 TSX which doesn't have a roof rack and I didn't want to install one just for this one trip. This bag was the only one I found that had everything included to be used with cars that do not have a roof rack. The installation couldn't be easier - I placed the 'non scratch protective mat' on my roof, it looks like a sheet of foamy crosshatch drawer liner, and threw the bag on that. Then I placed all of my stuff in the bag. Most of the things I placed in this bag were my clothes, linens, some books. Basically things that aren't too heavy and that would otherwise take up a lot of space in the car. The last step was to run the straps through the slots on the bag and through the car. It fastens using a plastic clip, much like a life vest, and is pretty easy to adjust and tighten.
After some of the reviews about these types of bags I did worry a bit about things getting wet if I drove through rain. I packed everything in heavy duty garbage bags, which actually made the whole process easier. I put all of my stuff in 8 garbage bags, so it was easier to pack and unpack the carrier as well. During the drive there were 4 or 5 rather intense rainstorms. Nothing in the bags got wet; and although there was the added protection of the garbage bags, the carrier itself was dry so it delivered on the waterproof claim.
Overall, this is not a miracle product - it is a bag that you throw on top of your car to carry extra stuff from place to place. But it did exactly what I wanted it to, and I barely even noticed a difference in miles per gallon because of the bag.
Cons: There were a couple of things that weren't perfect.
1 - the protective mat flops around if it's placed too close to the front of the bag because the wind raises the front of the bag at highway speeds. This is a bit annoying, but I found that after a bit (like a half hour or hour) the mat bunches up and stops making noise. This could probably be prevented by shifting the mat back a few inches in the first place.
2 - in very strong rain, some of the water got through the weatherstripping on the doors because the strap compressed the rubber seal. This is to be expected and it wasn't too noticeable, just a couple of drops.
Even though there were these two small complaints I still gave this product 5 stars because it did what I expected it to without any problems and I would recommend it to anyone. It saved me a lot of money and let me get all of my things down in one trip, overall I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

We have three cars and not one of them has a roof rack. Our largest car is a Hyundai Accent with a large trunk but not enough room for all our gear, bags and Ice-chest. We needed to fit, three adults and a 82lb dog in the car along with our stuff to go to our family reunion. I took a chance on this bag out of desperation.
We were very pleased with it's performance. The non-slip mat is part of its success. It was easy to put on the car and secure. The tie-downs actually go around the bag and the roof and through the door openings inside the car. We applied tension inside the car and secured the loose ends vs doing it on the outside. This way there was nothing flapping in the breeze. We also stopped after about 5 miles to check the bag, to see if it really would stay on the roof. It was very secure.
We did a practice pack before our trip. The secret to success is to put the heavier items on bottom of the bag and the lighter item in last (try to fill all the empty areas). The fuller it is, the easier it is to pack and tighten down.
We went from Portland, Oregon area to Crater Lake. We experienced minimal drag and our mileage was not significantly affected. We did not experience the whistling sound that accompanies regular roof racks.
Thank you to the designer and manufacturer for this great product. When we were done, the bag and mat packed away nicely and is sitting on the shelf waiting for our next trip. We didn't have to do any rearranging to store it.
